“It takes courage to (grow into and) become who you really are”, E.E. Cummings.
I believe wholeheartedly in this statement. It takes tremendous courage to not be pushed back by the myriad forces that can keep one from truly becoming oneself; in thought, in action, word. Yet the benefits from living congruently with who you are, and meant to be, are nothing short of monumental. So much is gained from this huge undertaking, not the least of which includes increases in one’s self-esteem, self-respect and the building of a strong, core, resilient self that can then take on other challenges.
In the case of NB and trans individuals, the push to be silent, to live according to what has been proscribed for you as opposed to who you know yourself to be can be tremendous. While you may not always be aware of the cost of this, think of the way in which this action may be limiting you from experiencing your life fully. Think of the impact of not letting others truly see you, know you. Imagine the cumulative effect of this over many years and you’ll understand why so many NB/trans individuals are prone to depression and anxiety; both the cost of one’s lived “minority stress”.
In my work with clients, I will meet them wherever they are in their gender, sexual orientation journeys; creating safety so they can explore their life contexts from which to choose informed, empowered choices for their future. Working from a humanistic, existentialist, feminist background I employ therapy interventions from EFT, Mindfulness-Self-compassion, Psychodynamic, Social Justice lenses, using what works best for each client and modifying our work based on their feedback.
I consider it a privilege to do the work I do, which I love. I look forward to working with you in the future.
